15 Feb, 2012 01:00 AM

YOUNG people in Macarthur with cystic fibrosis can be in no doubt that their whole community is behind them.

Last Saturday’s Swimathon for Cystic Fibrosis raised a whopping $83,000 — and counting — to help fund research and provide support for sufferers of the disease, which clogs the lungs and digestive system with mucus.

That’s the equivalent of more than $1000 raised for each of the 82 local residents with cystic fibrosis (CF), including Raby’s Lauren Rowe (pictured above).

Former Advertiser journalist Michelle Fenech started the event four years ago, and it has now raised a total of $227,000. More than 150 local swimmers swam more than 200 kilometres at Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre.

<img width="290" height="150"alt="" src="http://www.wclc.com.au/wp-content/themes/striking/cache/images/CF2012-3703-290x150.jpg" />

Penny Free of Elderslie, whose 12-year-old daughter Julia has CF, said she was speechless when she found out how much money had been raised. Mrs Free said the event showed kids with CF that they’ve got a whole community behind them,” she said. “There’s a lot of people out there who care about them and want to support them.”

Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre staff faced a last minute rush to get the pool ready on Saturday morning after the gym and foyer were flooded in Friday’s storm. Mr Barnes said the most amazing thing about Saturday for him was the number of people who helped out and turned up to swim. “It gets bigger and bigger and I can’t wait till next year.”

<img width="290" height="150"alt="" src="http://www.wclc.com.au/wp-content/themes/striking/cache/images/IMG_3711-290x150.jpg" />

NSW Sport Minister Graham Annesley opened the swim and other local MPs donned their swimmers.

Committee member Michelle Fenech thanked James Barnes and the team at Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre, the team at Lifehouse Church Camden, Tahmoor Lions Club, Plus Fitness, Sharon’s Photography, Macarthur Castles and Rob Doorey from C91.3.

AS MANY as 500 parents and children a day have been leaving Wollondilly Leisure Centre with big smiles on their faces these school holidays.

Centre manager James Barnes said the leisure centre had hosted a range of exciting and educational activities to keep the kids occupied and the parents happy, such as the pool inflatable and intensive learn-to-swim lessons.

“We’ve had the pool inflatable up in the holidays every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which is free once you pay your entry,” he said.

“We’ve also had great little holiday activities for primary-school aged children, which involves a mix of indoor sports games and pool activities.”

“We are trying to give people something to do other than just swim and splash around, so we always have toys and games out and provide activities.”

The pool inflatable will be in action from 11am Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Entry to the pool is $4.80 adults, $3.70 concession or $14.40 for a family. Details: 4677 1251.

From this Week’s Wollondilly Advertiser

WOLLONDILLY Leisure Centre manager James Barnes says he hopes summer is here to stay after the pool was drenched with the third wettest summer on record.
Mr Barnes said the pool’s patrons in December were the lowest he had witnessed. “December was the quietest I’ve ever seen and I’ve worked in swimming pools in Picton and Campbelltown for 15 years,” he said. He estimated that early January’s visits had doubled from previous months.

“It’s finally picked up,” he said.”A lot more families have come out since the sun’s come out.”
Weather Channel senior meteorologist Tom Saunders said 2011 was Australia’s third wettest year recorded since 1900.

It really is quite simple & the author lost 19+kg over the course of the year. Something to read as you get motivated again after the Christmas break.

Because weight loss comes down not to fad diets but to one very simple equation: calories in minus calories out.

I have lost 19 kilograms this year. I began the year weighing 86.5 kilograms with a body mass index of 27 (anything 26 or more is overweight). I’ll end it at 67.5 kilograms with an index of 21, well within the healthy range. I realise I’m supposed to be horribly embarrassed revealing all this; it’s not the done thing.

But, you see, I’ve always been fond of numbers.

My new year’s resolution, revealed on these pages, was to lose weight by doing one minute of exercise for every dollar I spent. I built a spreadsheet and everything. Disaster struck when I had to put my car in for about $1000 of repairs (that is 17 hours of exercise). I had the right idea, wrong equation.

It’s accounting – just like the federal budget, with its incoming revenue and outgoing expenses.
If you are putting on weight, you are failing to balance the books. You are eating too much or not moving enough, or both.
